Episode 3: Lorena Rojas – A Story of Perseverance
Meet Lorena Rojas, whose journey began in Zacatecas, Mexico, and continued in Austin, Texas, after her widowed mother brought her and her sisters to the U.S. in search of a better life. After high school, Lorena spent more than a decade building laptops and desktops, hands-on work she took enjoyed.
Then, tragedy struck. A car accident claimed the life of her 17-year-old son, and Lorena was left to battle a grief no parent should have to endure. Despite the overwhelming pain and lingering depression, she returned to work. Soon after, her job was relocated out of the country, and, once again, Lorena had to start over.
She enrolled in a certificate program for office administration, determined to rebuild her career. She was later hired by Peak Performers, and we placed her with the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts, where she worked for eight years and received accommodations to support her mental health.
Today, Lorena has been hired full-time by the Comptroller’s office. Surrounded by family and stability, she’s found peace, purpose, and happiness again.
Lorena’s story reminds us that perseverance in the face of unimaginable loss is possible. Her story is powerful.
